How do hydraulic filter systems work?

Hydraulic filters are part of the hydraulic system for continually removing contaminants in hydraulic oil and other hydraulic fluids. This process purifies the hydraulic fluid and protects the system from damage caused by particulate matter. The type of hydraulic filter depends on its fluid flow, application pressure drop, working pressure, volume, construction and more.

Every hydraulic system consists of several basic hydraulic filter components, including filter heads, filter canisters, bypass valves, reservoir, filter, pump, lines, control valves and a hydraulic cylinder.

The filter head has different sizes of exit and entry connections. These different sizes allow an impure liquid to enter and exit the filtered liquid. The filter is in the canister housing, and the filter head protects it from controlling the liquid flow.

This element is the most important component of the filter for waste removal. If dust accumulates in the filter, the bypass valve may be a pressure relief valve to open the hydraulic oil flow.

How do hydraulic filter systems work?

Normally the hydraulic oil from the hydraulic system enters the hydraulic filter and is filtered and then pumped out of the hydraulic oil outlet port. However, due to the continuous action, the foreign particles entering the filter element combine to form a pressure difference between the input and outlet of the filter.

When the bypass relief valve detects this pressure difference, it sends the fluid directly to the outlet, opens the valve and sends a signal to replace or clean the filter. Hydraulic fluid is the central section of the hydraulic system. Therefore, no system works without the proper amount of fluid volume.

The increasing use of hydraulic fluid systems increases the risk of hydraulic oil contamination. Leaks, rust, ventilation, holes, damaged seals and more can contaminate the hydraulic oil. The problems caused by contaminated hydraulic fluids fit into three categories: degenerative, temporary and catastrophic obstacles.

Degenerative is a series of faults that slows down the regular operation of the hydraulic system.

Temporary is an unexpected error that occurs at irregular intervals.

A catastrophic obstacle is the complete end of the hydraulic system.
